Nyak is a Facility dog from Canine Companions for Independence who works at the ChandlerTripp School with students from age 0-5 who have a wide range of disabilities. Nyak’s primary duty is with a preschool class for severely disabled and/or medically fragile students but during school year he also visits other classrooms and attends school parties. He is well loved by the staff and he gives unconditional love to all.
During an ordinary day Nyak waits for students outside and greets each of them with a wagging tail. When inside Nyak models how to press a switch to say: “Good morning.” During the school day Nyak is part of everything. For example, during morning circle he shakes hands, in motor room he seeks his ball hidden by students, outside Nyak fetches a ball thrown by students (many of them have orthopedic impairments and throwing is difficult for them). Nyak participates in tea parties and plays patient for doctors and nurses. He also dresses up for occasions like Halloween and Valentine’s Day (red heart print boxers.) Nyak also changes his collar and leash every month to help students with color recognition.
One very special duty Nyak has acquired is to help blind or visually impaired students who are very afraid of dogs. Nyak teams up with the Orientation and Mobility Teacher to give students consistent opportunities to learn about dog behavior. Nyak’s calm manner allows students to realize that dogs can be fun to play with. Parents are very thankful for Nyak’s help. Nyak is now 8.5 years old and has some undiagnosed health problems that require frequent checkups. Currently he is doing well. He loves to work, eat and play!
